Contemporary painting and collage

Artist Statement

I’m inspired by and explore found material.

Entering the unknown through a fluid, playful process, allows me to produce work beyond anything I’m already aware of. It allows me to examine unrelated elements, re-assemble and build new relationships and generate surprise combinations. I don’t know, when I start, what my end result will be but I recognise it emerging once it starts to happen.

By utilising components of a personally selected, pre-archived collection of fragments, I’m able to engage with and investigate how remnants, detritus and signifiers of today’s society can be transformed. I question preconceptions surrounding the production and value of art and break down traditional aesthetic.

Popular, mass-media magazines, photographs, newspapers, packaging and internet imagery are a constant source of inspiration. By revealing layers and textures built up during the painting process, it is my aim to create work that inspires a slower, more considered period of observation that highlights and contradicts the rapid consumption of imagery generated by today’s digital age.

This interaction with paint and collage allows me to extend the language of each medium and permits me to reconstruct every day materials into something other – enables me to re-present rather than represent. I’m looking for the materialisation of something new and search for combinations – of various scale – that evolve from a place of unknown discovery.

What I’m ultimately looking to achieve is a result derived from my engagement with the world I’m living in. Whilst acknowledging the resilience and rich history of painting and implementing many of its proven techniques, I have no interest in producing work that results from the execution of a formulaic process that’s been followed and completed then sent out into the world.
